Out of the square

"Working Outside the Square" brings together 50 Macedon Ranges artists who normally work in a medium other than glass. Their creative challenge is a fused glass item of about 250mm diameter in the shape of a circle, square or triangle.
Initiated by Woodend glass artist, Ettore Di Pilla, the project culminates with an exhibition at the MAD gallery in Lancefield from today until June 15.
All the work will be on sale for $75 with proceeds to fund an emerging art student's tuition.
"We all know how hard it is to become established in the art community and this project provides a chance for all established artists who wish to help out a younger artist," said Ettore, who guided the participants, ranging from university students to internationally recognised artists, at his studio.
Axess Glass provided all materials for the project with additional support from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the MAD Gallery and Café.
The exhibition will include work by painters John Walsh and Helen Cottle, sculptor Anthony Syndicas, cartoonist Neil Matterson, landscape gardener Michael McCoy, as well as potters, silversmiths, photographers, textile artists and others. A special piece symbolising the various creative input into the project has been made by Ettore Di Pilla and will also be available for purchase.
The MAD Gallery and Cafe is at 19 High Street, Lancefield and open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
